When two college friends meet at a holiday party in a new city, half a lifetime since they last spoke, both see how their mistakes and grudges have haunted them into their adulthood.

Two friends from a graduate program show up at their professor's house to have a 3-way with him. When they find out that their professor - "Number 3" - is running late, and they are left alone with each other they begin to question each other's motives. As the two become more competitive and the stakes get higher, they wrestle with the question: "If he is Number 3, who is Number 1"?
